Valentine’s Picks: 5 Decadent Brews to Double as Dessert

Screen Shot 2014-02-14 at 10.41.03 AMYesterday, we brought you beers and chocolates that produce perfect Valentine’s pairings.

Today, we’re talking about some decadent brews that can serve as sweet treats all on their own.

Mostly dark (mostly high ABV) beers with notes of chocolate, coffee, chilies or fruit, we recommend splitting a bottle with your Valentine or staying in for the evening (and hiding your keys) if you plan to skip this holiday and do some sipping solo.

Crème Brûlée | Southern Tier Brewing Company | 9.5% abvScreen Shot 2014-02-14 at 10.34.50 AM The name says it all. This imperial milkstout is brewed with vanilla and lactose sugar to expertly emulate its classic namesake dessert. Crème Brûlée is released in Southern Tier territories (including Texas) each February, so look for it on the shelves of your favorite bottle shop today.

A “Spring” release that hits shelves in February, Chocolate Ale comes as a collaboration between Boulevard and Kansas City Chocolatier Christopher Elbow. Brewed with Cacao Nibs, Pale Malt, Caracrystal Wheat and Simpsons Honey Naked Oats, this beer straddles the creamy and roasty lines with ease and crescendos with the classic bittersweet finish of dark chocolate.

Named after a southern favorite, this beer promises that you can “have your cake and drink it too.” Notes of dark chocolate, malt and cherries combine in this Houston Brewery’s boundary-pushing brew.

It’s relatively impossible to describe how good this beer is without making a joke about how it’s aptly named. An imperial stout aged on espresso beans, chocolate, vanilla beans, and ancho chile peppers, Bomb! is the perfect brew to bring you a little sweet heat this Valentine’s Day.

This draft only brew was released in Dallas-Fort Worth just in time for Valentine’s Day, and is certainly making us non-metroplex dwellers feel a little lovelorn. A play on the brewery’s popular imperial milkstout, this amped up version was brewed with 350 lbs of raspberry puree in a 930 gallon batch to give it a tartness in the finish and an intoxicating nose. Enjoy one with your Valentine at one of the many DFW accounts carrying it, or get up to a 1 liter growler fill at Craft and Growler if you’d like to take it on the go (or mail it to Austin for us).
