Dallas Winter Warmer Wrap-Up (W/ Photo Gallery)

DallasWinterWarmer13As a reluctant native of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex who fled to Austin for college and never…never..looked back, if you would have told me six years ago that I’d one day be making weekend trips to Dallas to attend amazing craft beer festivals, sample amazing Dallas craft beer, and visit amazing Dallas craft beer bars, I would have thought that prophecy held about as much credence as the idea that real men drink MGD64.

But, bizarrely luckily for Dallasites, I was completely and utterly wrong. Yes, I can now say with the utmost (albeit, cheesy) sincerity, that there are some pretty big things brewing in big D.

On the heels of The Big Texas Beer Festival and the Untapped Festival, the Dallas Winter Warmer, held in Annette Strauss Square Dec. 15, represented yet another successful craft beer festival for Dallas.

A total of 38 breweries came out to pour some winter favorites, ranging from stouts, porters and barleywines, to Belgian quads, winter warmers and hard ciders.

With a smaller crowd than your typical beer festival, (tickets were limited to 2,000) lines moved swiftly and never got out of control. The relaxed nature of the event also meant that there was ample time (and seating) to enjoy samples before venturing on to the next brew. In fact, only a small fraction of kegs were floated by day’s end.

Of course, the usual festival season white whales were out in full force, with Alaskan Smoked Porter and Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA definitely attracting considerable samplers.

Another highlight of the festival was being among the first to experience offerings from Dallas’ newest brewery, Community Beer Company. Of the three solid brews they debuted at the festival, we were definitely drawn to, and considerably impressed with, their winter seasonal, Regalement.

Garland-based Lakewood Brewing enticed attendees with their flagship Temptress Imperial Milkstout dispensed three ways–the classic Temptress, The Bourbon Street Temptress (cask conditioned with chicory root and bourbon soaked Noble Coyote coffee), and the Sin Mint (cask conditioned with mint). The jazzed up concoctions definitely served to elevate an already handsome brew.
